What is a credit union?

Credit unions have been putting their members first and providing them with the financial services they need in the UK since 1964. There are now nearly 400 in Britain which together provide responsible savings and loans to over 1 million people and look after over £1 billion in assets.

• Credit unions work to benefit their members, helping to provide communities with affordable loans and savings products and by promoting thrift and the wise use of money.

 • Credit unions are financial co-operatives owned and controlled by their members.

 • Credit unions are authorised by the Prudential Regulation Authority and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority and the Prudential Regulation Authority.

 • Savings in a credit union are covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme, so the first £85,000 of a member’s savings is completely safe.

 • More than 90% of the British population can join a credit union because of where they live. Many more can join because of the industry in which they work (including the police, public transport, the postal service, NHS, local authorities and higher education).

 • Credit unions exist in over 100 countries around the world. Over 200 million people are served by 56,000 credit unions and the sector looks after over $1.7 trillion in assets.

Chair

Nicoya Palastanga

I work as Partnership Manager for West Lindsey, Lincoln and North Kesteven councils. In recent years I have been working to prepare people for the changes of Universal Credit, with a particular focus on financial inclusion and helping people to manage their money. I joined Lincolnshire Credit Union in 2012 at a time when I helped to provide a Gainsborough base within the Guildhall. I joined the board as a director in 2014. I work to promote the benefits of credit unions, including LCU in financial capability projects across the county, supporting financial mentoring and access to financial products for vulnerable groups such as offenders.

Secretary

David Lynn

I have been engaged with growing credit union services in my home town of Grantham and across the rest of the county for over 10 years now. We have come a very long way since my early involvement on the Board of North Kesteven Credit Union serving a few hundred members to where we are today - a strong, professionally run credit union. I have a degree in electrical engineering and a diploma in management studies I bring project management and business skills to continue, alongside other directors.

Treasurer

Charles Walster

I have worked, as a qualified accountant (Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy) in Local Government, both directly and also for companies providing services to Local Government, where functions have been outsourced.
I have worked both in a central finance department (County Treasurer’s Department or equivalent) and also in the finance section of a department covering highways and planning services.
I have been involved in Budget Preparation, Financial Control and production of Final Accounts, and have specialised in the use of Information Technology in those and other areas.

David Gratrick

I have been a credit union member since 2005. I strongly believe that Lincolnshire Credit Union has an important role to play in encouraging financial capability and contributing to a stronger local economy. As a former City of Lincoln Councillor my expertise lies in the fact that I had to get on with all kinds of people ranging from my constituents to Officers on all levels of the Council from the C.E.O. to junior Officers.

John Nutton

After 20 years of working in the not for profit, registered social landlord, sector, in senior managerial positions and advisory capacities, coupled with assisting individuals to overcome their personal financial problems, I hope I can bring a differing perspective to assist boardroom decision making processes.

Bev Finnegan

Bev Finnegan has worked in local government for 26 years and is currently Programme Manager for Community Engagement at Lincolnshire County Council. She is responsible for - ensuring that the advice and support on consultation and engagement activity is provided to service areas across the Council; delivery of services through grant funding agreements for volunteer support services and Citizens Advice; policy development for corporate complaints, customer insight, volunteer engagement and community engagement; and support to other 'projects' such as the Armed Forces Covenant and Prevent. Historically, Bev has volunteered for Citizens Advice and RELATE and played a brief volunteering role on a local Co-operative funding panel.

Raising three daughters as a single working parent in Grimsby led to a keen understanding of financial struggles. Now grown with children of their own, Bev's daughters live in Cleethorpes and London. Believing that learning is important throughout life, Bev completed a Masters Degree in Public Health in 2016; this included writing a dissertation on the Use of Food Banks on the Coast. Bev lives in Waddingham with her partner of eight years.

Alison Goddard

I started my career working for Lincolnshire Probation Service, where I held the post of Offender Employment Projects Manager. During my four years with the Probation Service, I was responsible for developing various offender employment initiatives and contract managing external providers, as well as sourcing funds to deliver these services. I joined Lincolnshire Action Trust in early 2001 as one of the first employees, and have overseen its growth from 3 staff and a turnover of £50k per annum, to almost £1million per annum, with a staffing base of 55 currently. I am responsible for income generation, HR and finance, as well as the overall strategic development of the charity, but I also try to make time to get out and speak to clients as much as possible, and enjoy being involved in seeing new initiatives move from an initial idea to an operational service. I hold a first class honours degree in Social Policy and a Masters degree in Criminology and Social Policy.

Chief Executive Officer

Sarah Moseley

Born in Lincolnshire and having worked in the Financial Services sector for more than 28 years, Sarah brings to the Lincolnshire Credit Union knowledge of the County and a wealth of Banking, Customer Service, Corporate Engagement and Income Maximisation Experience.
The lack of financial stability during childhood led Sarah to reject her offer to study Politics at University and she started work at the age of 18.
With a fundamental belief that financial capability is a vital ingredient to people's overall wellbeing, Sarah actively promotes the difference that being financially resilient can make to people’s lives.
Sarah has previously volunteered with the Money for Life initiative and holds the National Skills Academy for Financial Services qualification in Financial Capability Facilitation Skills and sits on the steering group of the Lincolnshire Financial Inclusion Partnership.
As CEO Sarah supports the Board of Directors in delivery of the Strategic Business Plan and is tasked with ensuring the Lincolnshire Credit Union is managed and operated for the benefit and in the best interest of its Members.
